4D Landscape Architecture Studio has been designing gardens, parks, public spaces and urban green areas since 2002. Below, we answer some of the most frequently asked questions about our design services, professional approach and the commissioning process.

Design Services and Experience

1. What types and scales of projects does 4D work on?

4D Landscape Architecture Studio primarily designs public parks, public spaces, institutional landscapes, residential developments and urban green spaces. We also undertake the design of historic gardens, heritage settings, private gardens and landscapes associated with buildings. Our projects range from gardens of a few hundred square metres to urban development areas of up to around one hundred hectares.

2. Does 4D undertake large-scale urban green infrastructure and landscape masterplanning?

Yes. Our studio has experience in designing extensive urban green space networks, public parks, green corridors and landscape masterplans. We approach these projects by integrating urban planning, ecological, transport and recreational considerations into a coherent framework. Our large-scale references include the Népliget Landscape Architecture Ideas Competition and the Rákosrendező Zöld-völgy masterplan.

3. Does 4D design green façades, roof gardens and landscapes associated with buildings?

Yes. Our studio designs building-related green spaces, including green façades, roof gardens and courtyards. Our references include the vertical garden at Millenáris Széllkapu Park and the green façade of the Metrodom Green residential development. In such projects, we integrate planting design with architectural, technical, maintenance and functional requirements.

4. What experience and references does 4D have?

4D Landscape Architecture Studio was established in 2002 and has since worked on more than 450 landscape architecture designs. One of our best-known completed projects is Millenáris Széllkapu Park in Budapest, which received the international BIG SEE Award. Our portfolio includes award-winning competition entries, completed public parks and public spaces, residential landscapes, institutional gardens and historic landscapes.

5. Does 4D have experience with specialised or complex design projects?

Yes. Our portfolio includes large-scale urban development plans, complex public space projects, developments in heritage settings and green spaces requiring specialised technical solutions. Where necessary, we collaborate with experienced specialist designers and consultants to meet the specific requirements of a project.

Design Philosophy and Sustainability

6. What is 4D's approach to landscape architecture?

At 4D Landscape Architecture Studio, our approach is rooted in synthesis: bringing together ecological, architectural, technical and human considerations. We see the built environment as part of nature and green spaces as essential living components of urban infrastructure. Working closely with other design disciplines, we create spaces that respond to people's needs, preserve natural values and contribute to healthier, more liveable and climate-resilient cities.

7. How are sustainability and ecological considerations integrated into the design process?

We consider sustainability an integral part of the design process. We focus on preserving existing natural assets, supporting biodiversity, selecting appropriate plants, understanding soil and water conditions, and using durable, sustainable materials. Our aim is to develop landscape solutions that meet functional requirements while supporting the ecological processes of their surroundings.

8. Does 4D design climate-adaptive and nature-based solutions?

Yes. In designing public parks, public spaces, institutional landscapes and residential developments, we address urban heat mitigation, shading, on-site stormwater retention and the ecological performance of green spaces. Nature-based solutions — such as shade-providing vegetation, water retention measures and planting that supports diverse habitats — are tailored to the site's characteristics and the project's objectives.

9. How does 4D approach existing vegetation and natural assets?

Our designs take account of existing vegetation, trees, soil and water conditions, and ecological connections. We aim to preserve valuable natural features and develop solutions that build on the site's existing characteristics. Necessary interventions are determined by carefully balancing functional, technical, environmental and long-term maintenance requirements.

10. How does 4D incorporate community needs and user requirements?

A park or public space works best when it responds to the needs of different user groups. Our designs consider opportunities for relaxation, social interaction, physical activity, play and recreation, as well as accessibility and safe use. Depending on the project, participatory design methods and user engagement may also inform and support design decisions.

11. Does 4D consider long-term maintenance and operational requirements?

Yes. The long-term quality of a landscape depends not only on its condition at completion but also on how effectively it can be maintained and operated. We consider factors such as plant maintenance requirements and growth, material durability, irrigation and water management. Our goal is to create green spaces that remain functional and manageable over time.

Design Process and Collaboration

12. At what stage should a landscape architect be involved in a project?

A landscape architect should ideally be involved from the earliest project planning stages, alongside the development of the architectural and technical concept. This allows landform design, planting, stormwater management, circulation and user requirements to be coordinated from the outset. Early collaboration can help avoid later design changes and technical conflicts.

13. At which design stages can 4D become involved?

Our studio undertakes commissions at various stages, from initial project planning through to detailed construction documentation. We prepare feasibility studies, concept designs, design competition submissions, permit documentation and detailed construction drawings. We also develop and refine existing designs. Our services are tailored to the project's requirements and the client's needs.

14. Does 4D provide lead design services and multidisciplinary coordination?

Yes. Depending on the project, 4D Landscape Architecture Studio can act either as lead designer or as the landscape architecture consultant within a wider design team. When appointed as lead designer, we coordinate the relevant specialist disciplines and deliver integrated design documentation. On projects led by architects or other lead consultants, we provide landscape architecture services and coordinate our work with the wider team.

15. Can 4D involve specialist consultants?

Yes. For complex projects, we engage the necessary specialist designers and consultants, such as surveyors, utility infrastructure engineers, water systems engineers, structural engineers and arboricultural specialists. The disciplines involved depend on the project's scope and site conditions. Our aim is to ensure that all relevant technical considerations are addressed through a coordinated design process.

16. Does 4D undertake construction, or does it only provide design services?

4D Landscape Architecture Studio is a design practice and does not undertake construction works. We prepare landscape designs and technical documentation and, when requested, provide site-stage design support and designer's supervision during implementation. This helps ensure that issues arising during construction are resolved in line with the design intent.

Enquiries, Timelines and Fees

17. What information is required when requesting a proposal?

For an initial consultation, it is helpful to provide the site's address or cadastral reference, approximate area, a brief description of the project and any known deadlines. Available site plans, surveys and architectural drawings are also useful. You are welcome to contact us even if some information is not yet available; we can clarify the additional requirements once we understand the project.

18. How long does landscape architecture design take?

The design timeline depends on the project's size, complexity, required design stages and the number of specialist disciplines involved. Designing a smaller garden may take considerably less time than preparing a large public park or complex urban development project. We establish the project schedule in consultation with the client once the scope of work has been defined.

19. How are landscape architecture design fees determined?

Design fees are determined individually for each project. Key factors include the size of the site, the complexity of the assignment, the required design stages, the level of documentation and the specialist disciplines involved. Once the scope has been clarified, we prepare a tailored fee proposal specifying the services and associated costs.

20. How can I request a proposal or arrange an initial consultation with 4D?

You can contact us through the website's contact form, by email or by telephone. During the initial consultation, we discuss the project's objectives, scale, schedule and design requirements before preparing a tailored proposal. Based in Budapest, our studio primarily undertakes landscape architecture projects throughout Hungary.
